If you want to sustain a presence in space, whether that’s maintaining the International Space Station or establishing theoretical outposts on the Moon, then efficient resource utilization is a must. Anything a human might need to survive has to be brought along with them.
So it would follow that NASA has a good handle on technologies that can improve resource utilization. Why not apply those technologies here on Earth? That’s just what the agency has done at its NASA Ames Sustainability Base, a 50,000-sq.-ft. office building and showcase for sustainable technologies. As if I didn’t have enough to worry about as a parent, now my kids can create semi-autonomous robots that can be remotely controlled via a mobile phone.
One of the first announcements out of last week’s CES show was that Lego had unveiled its new Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit, which in addition to more powerful motors and double the processing speed, also boasts Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to control your robots using an app for your Android or iOS mobile phone. Instructions are provided by an Autodesk-powered app.
Every time oil prices climb to new highs, people begin to think longingly of owning a true electric car. Forget the hybrids. Technologically speaking, a hybrid is an electric car with safety wheels. ElectronVault believes it can solve some of the issues that have, to date, plagued a pure electric car, such as cost and performance.
As part of Autodesk’s Clean Tech Partner Program, ElectronVault has begun to design large-scale battery packs that use batteries similar to those found in digital cameras and laptops. The company’s approach to creating batteries suitable for both electric vehicles and power grids alike is to simply increase the number of battery packs used, rather than creating different batteries for each.
