Competition Looking For Bright IDEAs

The International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) competition is accepting entries for its annual design competition.

Sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the competition honors “design excellence in products, ecodesign, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts.” This year’s jury includes representatives from Nokia, Feiz Design, Microsoft Mobile, BERG, Procter & Gamble, GE Healthcare, and the University of Michigan.

The application deadline is Feb. 10, and finalist will receive notification on March 30. The winners will be announced July 2, and presented with their awards at IDSA’s International Conference in Boston on Aug. 18.

Last year’s winners ranged from wheelchairs and bicycles, to airplane seats, tripods, and even “sexual well being” products. Among the highlights was Seth Astle’s Cadence (a Gold winner), a prosthetic and pedal for below-the-knee amputee cyclists that can help restore proper pedaling in order to limit energy loss and physical damage.

The One & Co. Design Team contributed The Drake chair, a cantilevered stacking chair made from a single loop of steel, and a team of car enthusiasts around the world contributed to the Fiat Mio concept car, an open-source/crowdsourcing project.
