The future is now! Or at least some of the future that was predicted in Back to the Future Part II. As you may recall, in the film Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) sports a pair of high-top sneakers with self-tying power laces. Now Nike has announced its own power laces, which will debut in 2015.
Nike previously produced a replica of McFly’s shoes (the 2011 Nike MAG) in a run of 1,500 that were auctioned off to support the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Nike designer Tinker Hatfield confirmed the power lace announcement in an interview with Sole Collector earlier this month. Nike filed a patent on self-lacing shoes in 2010, although at least one motivated inventor beat them to the punch.
Based on the timeline of the film, McFly is scheduled to arrive in our future next year. No word on hover boards yet, but I’m not getting my hopes up when it comes to flying cars.
