In late November, InnovMetric Software Inc. (Quebec, QC) released version 12.1 of its PolyWorks high-density point-cloud processing software system. A key part of the 12.1 release is a new Play Inspection tool that automatically builds a guided step-by-step sequence to capture 3D datasets of a new piece, says the company.

The Play Inspection tool, says InnovMetric, has been fully integrated into Phase II of the company’s new DirectReplay technology. DirectReplay simplifies multi-piece inspection tasks performed with any point-cloud digitizer or tactile probing device by overcoming the limitations of existing teaching modes, reports the company. In the company’s description, DirectReplay is explained to be a new software architecture in which the operator’s intent is directly embedded in the inspection project itself without having to rely on an operation history tree.

Phase I of the DirectReplay technology introduction focused on handling point-cloud-only measurement tasks. It provided a Play Extraction tool and automatic project update capabilities. These capabilities allow users to directly measure and inspect a new piece from an existing inspection project without recording operations, programming, or scripting.
The new Play Inspection tool adds automation to the inspection of multiple pieces and provides a guided sequence that is automatically built in real time. Play Inspection maintains synchronization between the sequence and the project, providing users the flexibility to modify their projects at any given point in time.
The Play Inspection tool, which enables users to manage point-cloud digitizers and probing devices in a single integrated workflow, can automatically propose a logical order of measurement based on device positions, data alignments, object tree view sequence, and geometric constraints. It also can trigger the correct measurement method for each object such as laser scanner plug-in, file browser, or probing device, and it manages multiple device positions.

The PolyWorks suite of software includes tailored solutions for airfoil gauging, dimensional control, finite element meshing, fixture and jig building, point-cloud engineering, polygonal manufacturing, reverse engineering, and statistical process control.
