EOS of North America

| Published May 1, 2008

The Electro-Optical Systems (EOS) North American headquarters was established in 2004 in Novi, MI, to distribute plastics laser-sintering and direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS) equipment on behalf of its parent company EOS GmbH Electro Optical Systems in Germany. EOS North America offers the entire range of EOS equipment and supports production in all materials compatible with those machines for rapid prototyping and manufacturing:

  • Plastics: A range of fine polyamides; aluminum, glass, or carbon fiber-filled polyamides; and a polystyrene suitable for use in plaster, shell, and vacuum casting applications.
  • Metals: maraging and stainless steels; cobalt chrome alloys; and titanium Ti64.

Early adopters of rapid manufacturing technology represent many industries: aerospace, automotive, medical, and dental applications; sporting goods and recreational manufacturing; and a wide range of plastic and metal service suppliers. Customers evaluate rapid manufacturing with care and, often, extensive cost calculations. Service bureaus, for example, measure the volumes being produced on their existing equipment to determine their break-even point for production on laser-sintering equipment. One dental service group set a goal of laser-sintering two batches of 200 individually customized copings and bridges a day. EOS was able to meet and exceed those requirements.

Other reasons customers adopt laser sintering equipment include a need for:

  • Customizing individual parts
  • Creating complex geometries
  • Reducing production times

Manufacturing in production volumes too low to be cost-effective using traditional processes
Over the next few years, plastics laser sintering and DMLS will be available in a broader range of materials, including flexible and ductile plastics and new color plastics. These offerings will be driven by growth in the market for rapid manufacturing.
