XtremeWorkstation for High-Performance Computing

New Appro workstation handles compute-intensive applications.

High-performance enterprise computing system provider ApproInternational, Inc. (Milpitas, CA) describes its new ApproXtremeWorkstation as designed to handle compute- and memory-intensivetechnical workloads such as those typically encountered by MCAD, CAE,petroleum visualization, automotive, aerospace, electronic design, DCC,3D modeling, and CAD professionals. When equipped with 128GB of memory,the XtremeWorkstation provides more than four times the graphics,processor, and memory bandwidth of its predecessors. Additionally,compared to prior models, it offers memory latency that is 25 percentlower and twice the compute power.
A mid to high-end x86 workstation, the Appro XtremeWorkstation comeswith up to 128GB of DDR2 memory and from two to four AMD Opteron 8000series processors. The XtremeWorkstation is equipped with twofull-length PCI-Express x16 slots for high-end graphics cards, such asthe NVIDIA Quadro FX4500 X2 or the NVIDIA Quadro FX5500. Additionalslots include one half-length PCI-Express x4 bus in a x16 connectorslot, two half-length PCI-X 64-bit 133/100/66MHz slots, and onefull-length PCI-X 64-bit 133/100/66MHz slot.

The XtremeWorkstation can be outfitted with up to 6.0TB SATA or 2.4TBSAS hot-swappable drives. It supports one 3.5-inch floppy and a pair of5.25-inch external drive bays. Miscellaneous features include Dual Broadcom 5721 Gigabit networkInterface controller, redundant power supplies, and threesystem-cooling fans.
Available I/O connections include one VGA port, port, two PS/2connectors, one audio port, one serial and one 1394 port, external SASconnector, and four USB ports. System measurements are 5.15 x 16.92 x27.48 inches (13.1 x 43.0 x 69.8 cm), HxWxD, and its weight at maximumconfiguration ranges between 50lbs. (22.7kg) and 62lbs. (28.2kg),depending upon model.
 
The XtremeWorkstation supports Windows or Linux. Appro backs theXtremeWorkstation with a two-year standard warranty; on-sitemaintenance and installation service options are available.
